Reps want NUC to approve establishment of Medical School at Yola varsityPosted: 13 years ago |
The House of Representatives on Thursday in Abuja urged the National University Commission (NUC) to approve the establishment of a medical school at the Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola. The House also urged the Federal Government to upgrade the Federal Medical Centre, Yola to a teaching hospital. The resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Rep. Aishatu Ahmed (PDP-Adamawa), which was adopted without debate when put to vote by the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal. The motion was entitled ``Urgent need to establish a medical school at Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola and to upgrade the Federal Medical Centre, Yola to a University Teaching Hospital.’’ Ahmed, while moving the motion said that Adamawa State with a population of about four million people out of the three states in the old north eastern states does not have a medical school and a federal teaching hospital. She said that a medical school was a prerequisite for a university teaching hospital, adding that it was the reason for the absence of a university teaching hospital in the state. According to her, the availability and the complementary functions of a medical school and a teaching hospital will address the problem of shortage of health specialists in the state. She said that the host community would benefit much from the establishment of such institutions in terms of job and business opportunities. Ahmed stated further that over the years, residents of the state travelled long distances, up to 400km, to access special health care services in Maiduguri and Bauchi, respectively. The lawmaker urged her colleagues to support the motion in order to assuage the sufferings of the people of the state. (NAN) |
